Feral Tribune

Feral Tribune was a left-wing satirical political weekly newspaper from Split , published by the publisher of the same name and founded by Viktor Ivančić, Predrag Lucić and Boris Dežulović. It appeared since the mid-1980s, initially as a weekend supplement to the daily Slobodna Dalmacija . In 1993 the editorial staff of the Feral Tribune separated from the then pro-government mother paper.

The name Feral Tribune is an allusion to the American, internationally recognized International Herald Tribune , feral is the English word for "wild" 'or "overgrown". During the war in Croatia, the Split editorial team took a critical stance and wrote relentlessly about increasing nationalism and war crimes in their own country.

Even after the end of the conservative Tuman era , the newspaper shed light on social, economic and political grievances. The satirical title pages and texts, as well as the critical comments, brought the satire newspaper numerous complaints of insult and denigration . The tense financial situation threatened the company's existence even then.

The court rulings aroused broad solidarity, especially among foreign media representatives. Organizations such as Reporters Without Borders and the International Federation of Journalists drew attention to the situation of the editorial team, and donations were collected in order to set up a rescue company that would enable the newspaper to continue running.

The Serbian writer and winner of the Leipzig Book Prize for European Understanding Bora Ćosić was a. a. Columnist at the Feral Tribune .

Since the financial difficulties could not be overcome, the last issue appeared on June 15, 2008.

Feral has received numerous international awards. In 1998 it was voted the best satirical newspaper in the world.
