The songs on the album come from four previously published studio albums by Hans Hartz. Thus, with the white doves are tired , Canada and storm three songs from the debut album storm! from 1982 included. Most of the pieces on the second album are merciless! , which appeared in 1983, taken from ( The blue balloon , 95 days , Mother Earth , Only stones live long , When millionaires go to sleep , Joe ... one more ). The titles Before my window stands a tree and What remains are the politicians come from the album MorgenGrauen from 1984. In addition, from the fourth studio album Neuland-Suite (1985) are the songs The Fish Silence , Music From The Distance… Dacapos Im Wind as well as … and therefore I go contained.

All the songs selected for the compilation were produced by music producer Christoph Busse , who also wrote the lyrics together with Hans Hartz.
Cover design
The album cover shows a white cloud on a light blue sky. On top of the cloud is a postage stamp showing a white carrier pigeon. In the upper part of the picture are the words Frei wie der Wind / Hans Hartz / Die Balladen in pink or white as well as some songs that are on the album.

Singles
Many of the songs included on the compilation were released as singles in previous years . Of these, the song The white pigeons are tired reached number 11 in the German charts and stayed in the Top 100 for 24 weeks. The piece Nur Steine Leben lang also reached number 50 and stayed in the charts for eight weeks. The best-of album itself did not hit the charts.
