Freiburg Declaration

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Freiburg Declaration is a declaration published in June 2012 by Roman Catholic priests and deacons from the Archdiocese of Freiburg . They confessed that they would give Holy Communion to Catholics who have remarried after divorce . After the publication they were pressured by Archbishop Robert Zollitsch to withdraw their signature. Nevertheless, at the invitation of Fridolin Keck , Vicar General of Freiburg , a meeting with the initiators is planned, Archbishop Zollitsch will attend.

While Archbishop Zollitsch expressed understanding for the concerns of the declaration and promised reforms of the pastoral care for remarried divorcees, others expressed themselves critically. Joachim Cardinal Meisner emphasized the indissolubility of marriage against possible reforms. He received strong criticism for this. The majority of the German bishops have not yet commented on the Freiburg Declaration.
