The Free Union in Lower Saxony (FU) was a political party active in Lower Saxony .

In 1977, a district reorganization came into force in Lower Saxony . The Free Union emerged in 1978 from the resistance, particularly in the Soltau district , to this reorganization. The FU entered the state election in 1978 and achieved 0.27% nationwide. of votes. In the Lower Saxony local elections in 1981, the FU obtained 20 local council seats and 6 district council seats. In 1982 the party only received 0.01% of the vote in the state elections.

As a result, the party limited itself to municipal politics in the Heidekreis district and in the city of Soltau . She eventually changed the name to BürgerUnion . The BürgerUnion is represented (as of December 2019) with one seat in the district council of the Heidekreis and four seats in the city council of Soltau.
