Liberty Tower in Castle

The Freedom Tower is located in the old town of Burg in the immediate vicinity of the historic city wall . The tower is also popularly known as the Kuhturm because the citizens of the upper town drove their cattle to the pastures of the "Unterm Hagen" field.

history

It was first mentioned in 1530. Its actual use is largely unknown. It is believed that it served as the residence of ministerials . This would also explain why it was not directly integrated into the city wall . The tower was used as a prison until 1910. The heavy prison doors inside the tower also date from this time. It later served as a homeless shelter and around 1940 as a youth hostel.

The tower has three floors, its walls are about one meter thick. About two meters below today's street level, you can still see the gate passage with the old street. It is believed that the old street level was raised as part of town planning. The tower has been restored in the present. Today the rooms are used as exhibition rooms. The tower can be visited especially on Museum Night and Open Monument Day. Guided tours can also be booked. The Hexenturm is located in the immediate vicinity of the Kuhturm .
