Witches tower in castle

The Hexenturm is located in the old town of Burger . Not far from the Freedom Tower , it is integrated into the Burger city wall .

history

The Witches Tower was built in the 11th century, although it is assumed that it was initially square and only got its round shape towards the end of the 15th century. Due to the loopholes , it can be assumed that it served as a watchtower and defense tower .

At the beginning of the 17th century there were several witch trials in Burg . During this time, the tower was used as a prison for the alleged witches, which is where its name comes from. There is a six meter deep dungeon in the tower . The prisoners could be let down there through a round opening in the floor.

The Hexenturm retained its function as a women's prison until 1846, when a new court and prison was built on Burger Hainstrasse.

The tower was to be demolished several times in the following period, as it was no longer used. However, these plans failed. It was restored in 1985 by monument preservationists, which is reminiscent of the year on the top of the tower. It was then extensively renovated between 1998 and 1999 and can now be viewed on guided tours.
