The Freiherr-vom-Stein-Gymnasium is a high school in the Gievenbeck district of Münster .

history

The school was founded in 1851 by Emilie Koch on the Georgskommende as a private Protestant daughter school. In the second half of the 19th century, the desire for own educational institutions for Protestant children could no longer be overlooked. In the area of ​​secondary schools, this led to the establishment of the precursor school of the Freiherr-vom-Stein -Gymnasium as an offer for girls. The Schiller Gymnasium was founded for boys.

The school buildings were on Richterstrasse, Frauenstrasse, Breiten Gasse, Mühlenstrasse, Achtermannstrasse, Sonnenstrasse (until 1941). After that, school operations continued in various buildings, including the Hansa School, until 1957. In 1954 the school was named Freiherr-vom-Stein-Schule. In 1957, the school building on what was then Hindenburgplatz (today Schlossplatz) was inaugurated. In 1972 the reformed upper level was introduced at the Stein Gymnasium as the first Gymnasium in Münster. In 1976 the girls' high school became co-educational and from then on boys could also attend.

The SPD of Münster failed in 1995 with the request to convert the Überwasser-Hauptschule, the Paul-Gerhardt-Realschule and the Stein-Gymnasium into a comprehensive school.

In 1993 the upper school cooperation with the Schillergymnasium began , which expired in 2007 due to the move.

After the lesson there is the possibility for the pupils in grades 5–7 to use the all-day offer. This can be divided into three blocks:

The first block is the lunch break. After lunching together in the cafeteria, the students can spend their free time in the all-day rooms or in the school yard. Among other things, there is a tober room under the all-day rooms. The play room offers the opportunity to run around, play table football, table tennis and billiards. In the GT-Treff the children can read and do handicrafts. There is an opportunity to relax in the relaxation room. Board games can be played in the games room.

The second block offers the children intensive homework supervision. Subject teachers are available to answer questions and guide you to concentrated work.

The third block includes inclination groups, work groups and open leisure activities.

The school offers all children who want to stay at school until 3:45 p.m. after completing their homework supervision the opportunity to use the offerings of various groups in musical, sporting, artistic and playful areas. This offer is intended to promote the meaningful organization of leisure time and offer increased opportunities for social learning.

The new Building

On December 13, 2000, the City Council of Münster decided that the Freiherr-vom-Stein-Gymnasium should be the new "Gymnasium in the West". The foundation stone was then laid in September 2004.

Even during the construction phase, there were lively discussions about the design of the new building, which is particularly noticeable due to its green color.

In June 2006 the school moved into the new building, which was opened on September 14th of the same year by the mayor Dr. Berthold Tillmann was officially inaugurated.
