Borudscherd Friday Mosque
The Friday Mosque of Borudscherd ( Persian مسجد جامع بروجرد- Masjid-e Jameh Borujerd ) is the large congregation mosque the Iranian city borujerd in the province of Lorestan . It is the oldest mosque in the area of the Zagros and western Iran. It ranks # 228 in the inventory of National Artifacts of Iran.
history
The mosque was built on the site of a Zoroastrian fire temple during the Sassanid Empire . The construction of the mosque is attributed to a minister named Hamuyeh or Hamuleh , who is said to have been appointed governor of Borujerd in the 9th century.
Over the centuries the mosque has been rebuilt several times; Inscriptions from various rulers and dynasties, such as the Seljuks , Safavids and Qajars, can be found on the building .
During the First Gulf War in 1980, the mosque was bombed by Iraqi planes.
A minaret was badly damaged in an earthquake in March 2006.
