The Voluntary Social Year Politics (FSJ Politik) is a voluntary service for adolescents and young adults between the ages of 16 and 26 in a political institution. It is often used after graduation as a bridging year for career orientation, but all people, regardless of their qualifications or where they come from, can take part. The FSJ policy usually starts on September 1st and lasts for 12 months. During this time, volunteers are involved in an assignment location and can thus gain a good insight into the everyday working life of a political institution and gain new experience. There may be the opportunity to develop and implement a project independently.

Job sites

An FSJ Politics can be completed in various locations where political education work is implemented. For example:

  • Educational houses
  • political and charitable foundations
  • Memorials
  • Youth associations
  • Unions
  • Citizen broadcasts
  • Parliamentary groups in the district or state parliament

Educational support

In every facility, the volunteers usually have a colleague as a permanent contact person who is responsible for educational support and technical guidance throughout the year. She trains the volunteer, regularly conducts reflection discussions with the volunteer and is the contact person for the provider.

carrier

Supporters of the FSJ culture are for example:

  • Lower Saxony and Bremen: LKJ Lower Saxony
  • Rhineland-Palatinate: Culture Office Rhineland-Palatinate
  • Schleswig-Holstein: LKJ Schleswig-Holstein
  • Thuringia: LKJ Thuringia

The providers plan and carry out the voluntary service, are the contact persons for volunteers and deployment sites and organize the training days and seminars:

Seminar groups

The various locations of the FSJ Kultur within a carrier are divided into groups of around 30 volunteers. In these groups the volunteers go to the seminars and education days. Each group has a permanent leader who organizes the seminars, is the contact person for the volunteers and regularly B. conducts reflective discussions through a visit to the deployment site.

Voluntary Services Culture and Education

Some providers from the various federal states together form the "Voluntary Services Culture and Education", which ensure common rules for implementation for FSJ Politics, FSJ School, FSJ Culture and the BFD Culture and Education , among others . You can register for a position in FSJ Politics across Germany via their website.

Working hours, finances, benefits and vacation

A FSJ policy is carried out full-time with around 40 hours per week or part-time for specific reasons. It usually lasts a year, but is recognized if it is shortened to six months.

The volunteers have 25 days of vacation if they are there for 12 months. The volunteers receive monthly pocket money of 370 to 402 euros. The child support will continue to be paid; the social security runs through the place of work during the year. Volunteers can apply for housing benefit if they move for their FSJ policy. The volunteers often get discounts for museums and cinemas and can use the school or trainee tariffs for bus and train tickets. However, there is no entitlement to this, which is why #freifahrtfuervolwillige ( international volunteer day ) is called on every year on December 5th.

For one year of commitment, two semesters are credited for the FSJ Politik. In addition, after 12 months of service, it can be used as a practical part for the technical college entrance qualification.

Education days

Creative workshop at a seminar

In addition to their work in the deployment sites, the volunteers take part in a total of 25 training days spread over the year, in the form of individual days or longer seminars. These are under a specific topic and can e.g. B. serve career orientation. During the time, volunteers can work at various workshops, e.g. B. Participate on political or creative topics and share their own experiences. In addition, the volunteers themselves can determine a lot about the content and contribute their interests and wishes. The deployment locations bear the travel costs to the seminar locations; the catering and accommodation are regulated and taken over by the respective provider. In addition, the training days count as working hours. You cannot take vacation during the seminars and missed training days must be made up for.

Independent project

A FSJ policy can give volunteers the opportunity to independently develop and implement their own project during the year. Volunteers can contribute their own ideas. Possible are e.g. B. own events or workshops that have a benefit for the FSJ policy or the deployment site. It is also possible to cooperate with other volunteers and work together on a project. The deployment site supports the volunteer as much as possible. Financial support can also be applied for.
