The Voluntary Social Year Culture (FSJ Kultur) is a voluntary service for adolescents and young adults between the ages of 16 and 26 in a cultural institution. It is often used after graduation as a bridging year for career orientation, but all people, regardless of their qualifications or where they come from, can take part. The FSJ Culture usually begins on September 1st and lasts 12 months. During this time, volunteers are involved in an assignment location and can thus gain a good insight into everyday working life in a cultural institution and gain new experience. There is the possibility to develop and implement a project independently.

Origin and history

In 2001, the FSJ Kultur was offered to 125 volunteers in five federal states for the first time.

Job sites

An FSJ culture can be completed in various cultural locations. There are a total of around 1,900 job sites nationwide. For example:

  • Museums
  • Educational centers
  • Adult education centers
  • Radio station
  • Art and music schools
  • theatre
  • Music associations
  • Memorials
  • Media centers
  • Libraries
  • Art and culture associations

Educational support

In every facility, the volunteers have a colleague as a permanent contact person who is responsible for educational support and professional guidance throughout the year. She trains the volunteer, regularly conducts reflection discussions with the volunteer and is the contact person for the provider.

carrier

Each of the 13 agencies in Germany is responsible for one or more of the 16 federal states. The providers plan and carry out the voluntary service, are the contact persons for volunteers and deployment sites and organize the training days and seminars:

  • Baden-Württemberg: LKJ Baden-Württemberg
  • Bavaria: BAG Spielmobile
  • Berlin and Brandenburg: LKJ Berlin
  • Hamburg: LAG children and youth culture
  • Hessen: LKB Hessen
  • Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: LKJ Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania
  • Lower Saxony and Bremen: LKJ Lower Saxony
  • North Rhine-Westphalia: LAG Arbeit Bildung Kultur Nordrhein-Westfalen
  • Rhineland-Palatinate: Culture Office Rhineland-Palatinate
  • Saxony: LKJ Saxony
  • Saxony-Anhalt: LKJ Saxony-Anhalt
  • Schleswig-Holstein: LKJ Schleswig-Holstein
  • Thuringia: LKJ Thuringia

Seminar groups

The various locations of the FSJ Kultur within a carrier are divided into groups of around 30 volunteers. In these groups the volunteers go to the seminars and education days. Each group has a permanent leader who organizes the seminars, is the contact person for the volunteers and regularly B. conducts reflective discussions through a visit to the deployment site.

Representation of interests

At the beginning of the voluntary service, each seminar group elects two volunteers who can represent their interests together at state and federal level. All representatives of the various seminar groups meet personally during the year and keep in touch in between. For example, topics up to now have been: improving the image of voluntary services, public relations, #Freiefahrtfuerfreiwillige or the creation of a volunteer portal.

Voluntary Services Culture and Education

The sponsors from the various federal states together form the "Voluntary Services Culture and Education", which ensure common rules for the implementation of the FSJ Culture, FSJ School, FSJ Politics and the BFD Culture and Education. You can register for a place in the FSJ Kultur throughout Germany via their website.

Umbrella organization

The Federal Association for Cultural Education for Children and Young People (BKJ) is the central office for the voluntary services for culture and education in Germany and coordinates these nationwide. Among other things, the BKJ takes care of public relations and registration in the registration portal.

Legal regulation

Separate laws apply to voluntary services: the Act on the Promotion of Youth Voluntary Services (JFDG) of May 16, 2008, valid since June 1, 2008, and the Federal Voluntary Service Act (BFDG) of April 28, 2011, valid since May 3, 2011.

Working hours, finances, benefits and vacation

A FSJ culture is done full-time with approx. 40 hours per week or part-time for specific reasons. It usually lasts a year, but is recognized if it is shortened to six months.

The volunteers have 25 days of vacation if they are there for 12 months. The volunteers receive monthly pocket money of 300 to 414 euros. The child support will continue to be paid; the social security runs through the place of work during the year. Volunteers can apply for housing benefit if they move for their FSJ Kultur. The volunteers often get discounts for museums and cinemas and can use the school or trainee tariffs for bus and train tickets. However, there is no entitlement to this, which is why #freifahrtfuervolwillige ( international volunteer day ) is called on every year on December 5th.

For one year of commitment, two waiting semesters are credited for the FSJ Kultur. It is also considered a pre-study internship for some courses and can be used as a practical part of the advanced technical college entrance qualification after 12 months of service.

Education days

Creative workshop at a seminar

In addition to their work in the deployment sites, the volunteers take part in a total of 25 training days spread over the year, in the form of individual days or longer seminars. These are under a specific topic and can e.g. B. serve career orientation. During the time, volunteers can work at various workshops, e.g. Participate, for example, on the subjects of photography, writing, music, painting and dance and share your own experiences. In addition, the volunteers themselves can determine a lot about the content and contribute their interests and wishes. The deployment locations bear the travel costs to the seminar locations; the catering and accommodation are regulated and taken over by the respective provider. In addition, the training days count as working hours. You cannot take vacation during the seminars and missed training days must be made up for.

Own project

In an FSJ Kultur, volunteers can independently develop and implement their own project during the year. Volunteers can contribute their own ideas. Possible are e.g. B. own events or workshops that are useful for the FSJ culture or the place of assignment. It is also possible to cooperate with other volunteers and work together on a project. The deployment site supports the volunteer as much as possible. Financial support can also be applied for.

registration

Registration runs throughout Germany via the website of the volunteer services for culture and education. There, you can suggest locations and times, using a map of Germany or after consultation. The registration period ranges from mid-January to mid-March each year. But even after that there may still be free places, which are displayed on the website.
