Fremri-Namur

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Fremri-Námur (also Fremrinámur ) volcanic system is located in northeast Iceland . It is located in Ódáðahraun south of the Krafla system and about 25 km south of Reykjahlíð and is about 45 km long.

Eruptions of the volcanic system and the formation of Lake Mývatn

At the shield volcano Ketildyngja (939 m), the central volcano of the system, there is a high temperature area . The associated volcanic system extends with crevasses down to the south into the Hvammsfjöll and north to the Skógarmannafjöll and is a total of 130 km long.

The lava field of the so-called "older Laxálava" started from an eruption of the Ketildyngja 3800 years ago , and because it blocked the outflow of the river Laxá í Aðaldal , the lake Mývatn was formed . Another, larger eruption took place around 2500 to 3000 years ago and produced the Búrfellshraun lava field .

The Sveinar Trench is also part of this system. As with the neighboring volcanic systems of Askja and Krafla , it is also noticeable in the case of Fremri-Námur that the extension in length far exceeds that in width. B. the Sveinar ditch about 30 km long, but nowhere more than 0.6 km wide. In the year of the great eruptions on the Askja, 1875, there were eruptions in February and August at the Sveinar Graben ( Sveinagjá ). Later in the same year another series of eruptions followed in Ódáðahraun east of Ketildyngja.

Sulfur mines

Sulfur was mined there for centuries and transported to Húsavík in a 4 ½ day trip . This explains the name of the area (dt. The front mine ). The sulfur there was of better quality than elsewhere because it lies in thick cakes on the lava. The mines were mostly around and in the Ketill crater . Today the area belongs to the state.
