Frieda Kretschmann-Winckelmann received her training as a graphic designer from Käthe Kollwitz and went on study trips to Paris and London . From 1904 she took part in exhibitions in Munich and Berlin. Around 1916 she also began making sculptures; as a sculptor she was initially self-taught. She learned wood carving from Ludwig Kunstmann around 1922 . Thieme-Becker describes the style of her wood carvings as coarse and appropriate to the material.

In Dresden in 1921 she exhibited two portrait busts, in Berlin in 1926 four portrait busts, including a portrait of Kollwitz, and carved nativity scenes. Until 1935 she taught at the VdBK painting school ; to whose members she belonged from 1901 to 1937. In 1930 she was deputy chairwoman of the VdBK, in 1931 chairwoman, from 1936 she was a member of the advisory board.
