The Frieda River Project is a major copper and gold deposit in Papua New Guinea , in the Sandaun Province on the border with East Sepik Province . The Swiss mining company Xstrata Frieda River Ltd holds a 76.2% stake, the Australian and Papua New Guinea-listed raw materials company Highlands Pacific Ltd 16.9% and OMRD Frieda Co Ltd 6.9% in the Frieda River project, which was founded in 1963 by John Pasquarelli was discovered. The start of construction is for 2014 [obsolete] and the start of production is planned for 2017 [obsolete] .

location

The copper and gold deposit is located about 200 km from the north coast of Papua New Guinea and 70 km from the Sepik , on the Frieda River , a tributary of the Sepik. It is located 175 km northwest of the Porgera gold mine and 75 km northeast of the open pit copper and gold mine on Ok Tedi , see Ok Tedi mine .

resource

The project includes the Nena, Horse / Ivaal / Trukai (HIT) and Koki prospects. The deposit has copper resources in the order of 13 million tons , gold resources of 20 million ounces and silver resources of 49 million ounces.

environment

There is a risk of pollution of the Sepik wetlands. Overburden from copper and gold production would have a devastating impact on waterfowl, fish populations and the vegetation of the river system near the banks. The indigenous peoples who live on the middle and lower Sepik are dependent on the resources that the forest and swamp offer them. The plantations of sago palms on the river are of particular importance, as the pith of the sago palm is the main food of the region.
