Peace of Westminster (1654)
With the Peace of Westminster on May 8, 1654, the First Anglo-Dutch War , which began in 1652, ended. In it, the Netherlands, which had lost the war, had to recognize the English navigation act .
In a secret clause determined by Johan de Witt and Cornelis de Graeff , the act of seclusion , William III of Orange was excluded from the office of governor of the Netherlands.
Tensions between the two countries were not resolved, and the Second Anglo-Dutch War of 1665-1667 soon followed .
