With southern Morocco is generally the southern part of Morocco , including (in the year 1160 by Berbers founded) former capital Marrakech south and inhabited mostly by Berbers areas (and east) called it. The most important port in the south is Agadir .

Historically, from 1912 to 1956 , the entire French protectorate of Morocco was also referred to as southern Morocco, in contrast to the smaller Spanish protectorate in the north, which was referred to as northern Morocco .

Today the Moroccan government designates the Western Sahara Republic, annexed in 1976 and 1979 respectively, as Southern Morocco. Great Moroccan nationalists also include Mauritania in southern Morocco, at least historically.
