Zalaszántó Peace Stupa
The Zalaszántó Peace Stupa is a Buddhist building located in Zalaszántó , Hungary . When it was completed in 1992, it was Europe's largest stupa with a height of 30 meters and a width of 24 meters .
The initiative to build the stupa came from the South Korean Buddhist monk Bob Jon. In December 1990 the Hungarian government made the building site available free of charge. Hungarian architects and a Hungarian construction company took over the work. With the help of public and private bodies from Austria, Hungary and South Korea, the building was completed between March and the end of September 1992.
The Peace Stupa was inaugurated on June 17, 1993 by the 14th Dalai Lama , Tendzin Gyatsho . It is located on the Konvácsi-Hegy mountain, which is 316 meters above the village. It consists of three levels, a dome and a golden top. Inside there are Buddhist texts, relics and a 24 meter high tree of life. The large Buddha statue comes from Korea and represents Siddhartha Gautama .
In the vicinity of the stupa there is also a Buddhist temple and a retreat house.
The entire facility is currently being looked after by two Tibetan monks from Ladakh .
