Friedenskirche

The Friedenskirche is a Protestant church in the Hahnerberg district in Wuppertal - Cronenberg and one of three places of worship of the Evangelical parish of Cronenberg.

history

Due to the population growth in the north of Cronenberg and Küllenhahn , the presbytery of the Küllenhahn community, founded in 1955, decided to build a community center near the still young residential area Wilhelmsring / Neuenhaus. A private hall of a residential building on Hahnerberger Strasse, initially used for church services, turned out to be unsuitable for permanent use. The new parish hall was initially intended to be an offshoot of the Hahnerberg church hall on Küllenhahner Strasse, but it was decided during construction to convert the Hahnerberg church hall, which was built at the same time, into a parish center and instead use the Wilhelmsring parish center as a place of worship called the Friedenskirche .

Shortly before the opening of the Friedenskirche in 1974, the area of the southern Hahnerberg fell to the Reformed parish of Cronenberg as part of extensive restructuring measures.Since then, the parish of Küllenhahn has been using the Hahnerberg community center as a second place of worship next to the Küllenhahn community hall, as originally intended. The first service in the Friedenskirche was celebrated at Easter 1974.

With the unification of the Evangelical Lutheran Emmaus Church Congregation and the Reformed Church Congregation in 2003, the peace church threatened for the first time to close in favor of the Oberdahl parish hall of the former Lutheran congregation, but this had to be demolished in 2004 due to water damage. The closure of the Hahnerberg community center of the Küllenhahn community was also decisive for the preservation of the Friedenskirche as the last place of worship in the north of Cronenberg. The declining number of visitors to the church services and the congregation's strict austerity measures nevertheless prompted a discussion about the closure of the Peace Church, which could only be operated at high costs and which was in urgent need of renovation. The last service for the time being took place in June 2016; after major renovations, the church is to be rented to the Diakonie as a new location for the two day care centers Mastweg and Karl-Greis-Straße from August 2017 , thus securing new income. The Friedenskirche will not be divested, however, after the construction work has been completed, part of the building should be available again as a place of worship.

The Friedenskirche has also been a permanent venue for the Cronenberg Model Railway Days for fourteen years .

Building description

The church is a low-rise building in a simple, post-war modern style . The twenty-meter-long church hall is set back, with the altar area facing south. In front of the church to the west is a foyer wing, the flat roof of which is only slightly surmounted by the extremely flat gable roof of the church hall. The front foyer wing houses a small sacristy-like chamber, several rooms for community work and the former confirmation hall. A large community hall is located on the west side at the level of the white, floor-to-ceiling windows, which, in addition to the other window frames and the large spherical cross , are the only structural elements that stand out from the otherwise simply clad with artificial slate and thus rather dark building. On the east side of the church, a large, floor-to-ceiling window front opens the view from the church hall to the spacious church garden, which has become overgrown in recent years and will come into use again with the establishment of the kindergarten.
