The Evangelical Lutheran Church of Peace is in Loga , a district of the East Frisian city of Leer . The church was built in the year 1891 according to plans by the architect Ferdinand Schorbach from Hanover in the neo-Gothic style.

history

According to the Emden Concordat of 1599, Lutherans were prohibited from building their own house of worship in the Reformed Loga. However, they had the opportunity to participate in the election of the reformed clergyman via the right to vote for interested parties (cooperative patronage). Although they were allowed to join the Lutheran congregation in the neighboring village of Logabirum, they had to contribute to church fees for the Reformed congregation in Loga. The von Wedel family, the lords of the Loga lordship, also belonged to the Lutherans. The family tried several times to push ahead with the construction of a church in Loga or at least to offer Lutheran services in the local Reformed Church . All of this was initially rejected. It was only when the Counts von Wedel gave financial guarantees for the future of the Lutheran congregation that it could be founded. As compensation, the Reformed community received 41,000 marks from the Prussian minister of education, Gustav von Goßler . In 1891 the church was finally built in neo-Gothic style according to plans by the architect Ferdinand Schorbach from Hanover . Karl-Georg von Wedel and Majoratsherr von Gödens and Evenburg donated the necessary land and financial means, who in return received church patronage . The count also donated land for a joint cemetery to both communities in the town. On June 24, 1891, the church with the 45 meter high west tower was consecrated. Towards the end of the Second World War , the tower and church were so badly damaged by shelling that their use was initially out of the question. Until the makeshift repairs were made, the community was a guest at the neighboring Reformed community. In 1949 the church was handed over to the parish again. The organ built by Johann Diepenbrock in 1891 was also badly damaged and was replaced in 1964 by a new instrument from Ahrend & Brunzema with 13 stops on two manuals and a pedal.
