Church in Nüttermoor

The Reformed Church in Nüttermoor , a district in Leer ( East Friesland ), was built around 1200 as a hall church on a terp .

History and architecture

The church was built as a rectangular hall church around 1200 in the Romanesque style on today's edge of the village on a ridge , which was additionally raised by an artificial terp. According to tradition, monks from the neighboring Thedinga monastery built the church. So far there is no evidence that the house of God was consecrated to Saint Peter before the Reformation . In 1529 the first Reformed preacher named "Ubbo" is mentioned, who introduced the evangelical doctrine and the then common Dutch as the language of worship. The large triumphal cross and the altar were removed, as well as a wayside shrine with the crucifixion scene on the outside of the south wall, and the wood was distributed under the poor.

On each long side, three larger windows have broken in, which owe their present shape to a later enlargement. The frieze under the rain eaves has been preserved. Until 1725, the south and north portals, which are now walled up, were used as separate entrances for men and women. In 1796 the last, the so-called "copulation door", was walled up in the side aisle. In the 17th century a bell tower was built, which was replaced in the 19th century by a new west tower, which is provided with a barrel vault in the basement . The pyramid roof is crowned by a tower knob, a cross and a horse as a wind vane. At the end of the 19th century the nave was lowered by one meter and the east gable was renewed at the beginning of the 20th century after a neighboring courtyard burned down.

In 1956 the church was completely renovated, especially the masonry, which had to be partially renewed. The original height of the nave was restored, a new roof structure was built and the entrance was relocated to the area of the east wall. A morgue has been located in the bell tower since 1975. In 1991 a new heating system was installed and in 1996 the pulpit was restored.

Furnishing

The last supper table dates from the 17th century and bears the coat of arms of a Groningen family. The chandelier was donated in 1671. The oak pulpit in the middle of the east wall dates from 1836.

organ

Johann Gottfried Rohlfs created the organ with nine stops on a manual and pedal in 1815/1816 . In 1894/1895 the instrument received a cone- type pedals from Johann Diepenbrock with two voices and is largely preserved. Jürgen Ahrend repaired the organ in 1975. It was restored in 1994/1995 by master organ builder Bartelt Immer from the north . In 2013 the organ restoration was completed in a second construction phase. Bartelt Immer reactivated Diepenbrock's pedal and reconstructed the three lost registers (transverse flute 8 ′, Dulcian 16 ′, trumpet 8 ′).
