Life

Entrepreneurial activity

Runge completed an apprenticeship as a technical businessman at Gebrüder Happich GmbH in Wuppertal. He worked there for ten years in the field and most recently as a sales manager. He then studied at the mechanical engineering school in Wuppertal and then business administration in Bochum.

Runge joined the medium-sized company EMKA Beschlagteile GmbH & Co. KG in Velbert in 1972 as the eighth employee . The business graduate has been a managing partner at EMKA since 1973. Under his leadership, EMKA developed into a medium-sized group of companies in the supply industry for switch cabinet and housing construction with around 1000 employees and over 200 million euros in sales.

From 2002, Runge has been a member of the board of directors of the Federal Association of Medium-Sized Enterprises (BVMW).

Activity as a sports official

For the 1990/91 season, Runge was elected president of the Wuppertal football club Wuppertaler SV (WSV) in 1991 , as the successor to Dieter Buchmüller . EMKA was the main sponsor of the WSV under Runge's leadership, and Runge himself invested large sums of his private assets in the club.

After the initial success of the club, with promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga, during his tenure, the club was relegated two years later. Runge was increasingly criticized, not least because of personnel decisions for which he was responsible. When some of the fans addressed him in a "public letter" at the end of 2012 / beginning of 2013, Runge resigned on January 12, 2013 as long-time president of the fourth division soccer club WSV. The board of directors of the association will continue to manage the business until further notice. How it will continue with the loan from Runge, in the amount of 2.5 million, to the association and the activity of EMKA as main sponsor in the future is not clear until the end of January 2013.

Runge's company EMKA has been the main sponsor of SSVg Velbert for some time . Runge is also a sponsor of boxing in Wuppertal .
