history
The Siebenhirten Cemetery was laid out in the 1780s. Due to the increasing number of residents, it was expanded in 1847, 1875, around 1901 and most recently in 1952. During the Second World War , the cemetery was badly hit by aerial bombs and was restored from 1945 to 1947. The church that was on the site was destroyed, the new Siebenhirten parish church was built north of the cemetery and consecrated in 1955.
In 1965, the Vienna City Council decided unanimously to close the Siebenhirten Cemetery from 1985, this period was extended by ten years in 1975. In a referendum in March 1980, however, a majority of the voters spoke out against an abandonment and the decision of the municipal council was overturned.
