The Sieker cemetery is a municipal cemetery in Bielefeld in North Rhine-Westphalia . The area was already used as a burial site in ancient times.

location

The cemetery is located between Otto-Brenner-Straße and Oldentruper Straße in the Sieker district in the Stieghorst district .

history

In the 1960s, the remains of 54 cremation graves were found in today's cemetery , which show that it was used as a burial site around 1600 years ago. The excavation site also contained a Roman gold coin and various containers of regional and Roman origin. Remains of an ancient settlement were also found about 300 meters from the site. The finds can be viewed in the Historical Museum Bielefeld and in the LWL Museum for Archeology in Herne .

The actual cemetery was opened in 1909 and served the then Sieker community as a burial place. Up until then, the dead had to be buried in Heepen , which was very costly. The cemetery gardener, who was responsible for the maintenance, had been released for hay use, which meant that he was allowed to graze his goats there. In 1928 the cemetery was expanded. In 1931 a simple chapel designed by the architect Krüger was added, in which a church window by the artist Karl Löwe can be seen.

layout

Lawn graves dominate the cemetery, giving the area a park-like character. In the south-western and therefore oldest part, the paths and graves are laid out more strictly geometrically than on the rest of the site. The tree plantings consist primarily of deciduous trees.
