The Friedrich Schiller Elementary School is a listed elementary school in the Berlin district of Mahlsdorf on a plot of approx. 5100 m² south of the Berlin-Mahlsdorf S-Bahn station .
history
At the house fathers meeting in 1904 it was decided that the Mahlsorfer elementary school should be improved by a new building. The foundation stone was laid on August 31, 1904 . The inauguration took place on June 2, 1905. Three years later, due to lack of space, the school was expanded to the north according to the plans of the architect Paul Tarruhn . A free-standing gymnasium was built on Hummelstrasse . The top floors were expanded and filled with large three-axis dormers. On October 1, 1909, the inauguration ceremony for the newly built building took place.
Between 1960 and 1970, significant changes were probably made to the roofs of the school building and gymnasium and the southern entrance to the first component was built inside. Another serious operation followed around 1980. So that the toilets can be used in the building, an annex with sanitary rooms was added to both staircase gables on the courtyard side. The former toilet facilities were gutted and converted into a gym. The building was lengthened and connected to the gym. The school had to be closed in the late 1980s due to broken ceiling beams in the auditorium . The school has been a registered monument since September 28, 1990 . In 1993, after various considerations, it had to be recognized that this school location could only be preserved through a comprehensive, thorough renovation. The plan was for the primary school to have two pre-school classes. At least one had to be made barrier-free and escape routes ensured. The fire protection also required structural modernization. All in all, it was a question of restoring the exterior and interior in accordance with the listed buildings. The planning was carried out in close consultation with the Lower Hellersdorf Monument Preservation and the State Monuments Office and was accompanied by the construction department of the Hellersdorf district. Extensive restoration work began between 1995 and 1997 in order to preserve the school of Mahlsdorf village history.
