Friedrich Rintelen (born February 20, 1881 in Berlin , † May 4, 1926 in Catania ) was a German art historian .

Rintelen studied philosophy and received his doctorate in Munich in 1902 . He then became an assistant at the Art History Institute in Florence . In 1909 he completed his habilitation in Berlin and was appointed professor there in 1912. From 1914 he taught as a full professor for art history at the University of Basel . In the winter semester of 1914/15 Theodor Hetzer did his doctorate with him in Basel. In 1925 he also took over the management of the Kunstmuseum Basel .

His son was the ophthalmologist Friedrich Rintelen (1906–1991).
