Schönschitz, son of the mayor of the Jakobsthal community , Marburg an der Drau district, was community leader in Yugoslavia in 1942 . When friends informed him one day that two Jews, Max Werdisheim, a wholesale merchant from Leoben, and his brother, a doctor, were in danger of being arrested by the Gestapo and sent away, he decided to help both of them out of their mortal danger without knowing them. Schönschitz issued them Yugoslav home documents with which they could travel across the Austrian border to Yugoslavia. On the basis of the certificate of origin, a district court in Yugoslavia issued Max a Yugoslav passport with which he could emigrate to Israel . His brother could also travel on.
