Friedrich Uppenborn

Life

Since no electrical engineering was taught at the polytechnic, Uppenborn acquired the knowledge himself. In 1892 he went to Schuckert & Co. in Nuremberg, where he developed ammeter and voltmeter. He also became a specialist writer with articles in the journal for applied electricity and published the Uppenborns calendar for electrical engineers . In 1891 he took over the editing of the magazine (from 1893 Centralblatt für Elektrotechnik). In 1888 he published a book on the history of the transformer with John Ambrose Fleming . From 1889 he headed the editorial team of the electrical engineering magazine (ETZ). He was also instrumental in developing the first safety regulations (today VDE 0100 ).

After he was appointed municipal electrical engineer in Munich in 1894, he founded the municipal lighting office and quickly promoted the development of electricity in Munich. He had taken all the important precautions when the city's contract with the gas company expired in 1899. The Munich electricity works were founded and the first steam power plant was able to take over the power supply.

He also introduced the electric tram in Munich. After this went online, he increased the output of the Muffatwerk and had a hydropower plant built below Moosburg by July 6, 1907, which was named Uppenbornwerke after him . He died after an appendix operation.
