The Friedrichsbau is a historic building in Heidelberg . It was built at the time for use by the University of Heidelberg and is located on Hauptstrasse near the Old Anatomy .

history

The Friedrichsbau was built from 1861 to 1864. The plans come from the district building inspector Wilhelm Waag . The building was erected on the site of the former Dominican monastery, which was bought in 1804 by Grand Duke Karl Friedrich von Baden , after whom the building was named.

Originally the institutes for physics, mineralogy, mathematics, technology and physiology were housed in the building. The representative building reflects the increased importance that has now been attached to the natural sciences.

The building was also used as an official residence for professors from Heidelberg University and their families. The physicists Hermann von Helmholtz and Gustav Robert Kirchhoff lived here for a time.

Today the Psychological Institute of the University of Heidelberg is in the Friedrichsbau.

architecture

The three-storey Friedrichsbau was built in a simple late classical style as an open three-wing complex. Robert Bunsen's monument larger than life is located on the square in front of the Friedrichsbau .
