Fritz Schroeder (born February 14, 1853 in Deutz ; † February 14, 1931 ) was a German gymnastics and sports teacher.

Life

Schroeder attended the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Gymnasium in Cologne and initially turned to banking. At the age of nineteen he joined the Cologne gymnastics club and devoted himself entirely to gymnastics training, which he perfected with Alfred Maul from Karlsruhe and Justus Carl Lion from Leipzig. After he had passed the gymnastics teacher examination at the gymnastics teacher training institute in Berlin in 1880, he was hired on February 1, 1881 as a municipal senior gymnastics teacher in Bonn. In the same year he took over the management of the youth department of the Bonn gymnastics club and became the club's first gymnastics supervisor.

From 1886 to 1901 Schroeder was Gauturnwart of Sieg-Rheingau and from 1899 to 1921 district gymnast of District VIIIb of the German Gymnastics Association , of which he was a member for many years and in which he held numerous specialist positions. Among other things, he was the first woman gymnast from 1919 to 1921. Schroeder earned particular merits with Ferdinand August Schmidt as the founder of the German Gymnastics School for the Establishment of Gyms (1886), which was merged with the “National Collection for the Establishment of German Gyms” to form the Dr. Goetz Foundation.

When the game and sports movement emerged at the end of the 19th century, Schroeder was also a pioneer and tireless promoter here. In 1882, after the establishment of the “Bonn Association for Body Care in People and School”, he set up regular student games on Arndtplatz and in the same year organized the first game festival for the city's clubs and schools on Hofgartenwiese. From 1892 he held play courses for teachers together with Ferdinand August Schmidt . In 1891 he began private training courses for gym teachers, which later merged into the municipal gymnastics teacher seminar. In 1892 he also took over the technical management of the gym teacher courses at the University of Bonn . In 1914 he organized the first West German university competition ("Rhenish Academic Olympia") in Bonn. For his university engagement, he received honorary membership in several student corporations, including the gymnastics association in VC Germania and ATB Suevia and Gothia Bonn. The university made him an honorary citizen upon his departure. He continued to support the Institute for Physical Exercise at the University of Bonn after he left.

After the First World War, Schroeder was a city councilor for the city of Bonn.

Awards
