Front Démocratique des Comores

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Front Démocratique des Comores (English: Democratic Front of the Comoros, FDC) is a political party in the island state of Comoros .

history

The FDC emerged as a group of exiles and was initially led by Mustapha Saïd Cheikh , who was persecuted for an attempted coup in 1985. The party was invited in 1990 to take part in Said Mohamed Djohar's government and helped to create the new 1992 constitution (Comorian constitutional referendum, June 7, 1992).

In the subsequent 1992 elections, the party received 8% of the vote, but only won two seats. Both mandates were lost again in the 1993 elections after President Said Mohamed Djohar dissolved parliament.

Cheikh was the FDC's candidate for the 2002 presidential election, but now came last among the nine candidates. The party subsequently joined the Alliance Camp des Îles Autonomes . In the 2004 elections, it won 12 of 18 directly elected seats and all 15 of the indirectly elected seats. In 2012 the party celebrated its 30th anniversary. Mohamed Issimaila , the party's general secretary, had served as Ministre de l'Education Nationale in the cabinet of the Baobab Union since 2011 .
