The Front uni national du Kampuchéa , FUNK for short , ( Cambodian រណសិរ្សរួបរួមជាតិកម្ពុជា, English Khmer United National Front) was a Cambodian political and military organization. It was founded on March 23, 1970 after the overthrow of Prince Norodom Sihanouk by the pro-American General Lon Nol in Beijing . The FUNK was formed by three organizations, the communist Khmer Rouge , the royalist Khmer Rumdo and the provietnamese Khmer Issarak . In the areas liberated from the resistance organizations, FUNK set up its own government, the Royal United National Government of Kampuchéa , or GRUNK for short . Norodom Sihanouk was the official head of this government, Penn Nouth was the prime minister and Khieu Samphan of the Khmer Rouge was deputy prime minister, defense minister and commander in chief of the armed forces. On April 17, 1975, FUNK officially took power in Cambodia. The sole power took over the Khmer Rouge. After Lon Nol was overthrown, Norodom Sihanouk and Penn Nouth officially formed the top of Cambodia but were under house arrest. On April 4, 1976, Khieu Samphan took over the post of Prime Minister.
