FrostWire is a peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing client. Up to and including version 4.21.8 it used the Gnutella - as well as the BitTorrent - network and was created in September 2005 through a spin-off from the LimeWire client . It is programmed cross-platform in Java and is available as free software under the GNU General Public License (GPL). From version 4.10.5, FrostWire also works on Intel-based Macs. With the start of version branch no. 5, support for the Gnutella network was ended. Since then the program has only supported the BitTorrent network.

history

Like many manufacturers of P2P software, Lime Wire LLC , the trademark holder of LimeWire , got into a legal battle with the RIAA and was forced to sign a cease and desist declaration . In the future, LimeWire will contain protective mechanisms to prevent the exchange of files protected by copyright . On October 26, 2010, Limewire LLC was prohibited from further distributing and supporting the software by a court ruling.

Open source developers, including many from the inner circle of the LimeWire team, did not agree with this development. They founded the FrostWire team, which refined the FrostWire software based on the original LimeWire roadmap . Thus FrostWire became the free successor to LimeWire. According to the developers, there will be no commercial version of the software; it should contain neither filters nor locks.
