The summer fruit ( Adoxophyes orana ) is a butterfly from the family of Winder (Tortricidae). The caterpillars are also known colloquially as fruit maggots .

description

The male moths reach a wingspan of 17 to 19 millimeters, the female moths have a wingspan of 19 to 22 millimeters. The head and thorax are beige in color. The forewings brownish-yellow or brownish to yellow-gray. The hind wings are gray or gray-brown.

Flight time

The species forms two generations from June to August and in September. The summer caterpillars can be observed from the end of June.

habitat

The oligophageous caterpillars can develop on the leaves of various types of fruit. These include apple trees , pear trees , cherry trees , plum trees , apricot trees and currant bushes .

Way of life

The eggs are laid by the female in clusters of 20 to 100 pieces on top of apple leaves. In pear trees, eggs are laid on the underside of the leaves. The caterpillars are green-yellow to olive-green in color. The caterpillars overwinter and pupate in May. The pupae are about 10 to 11 millimeters tall and dark brown.

The green caterpillars of the fruit peel moth are considered pests in agriculture . In addition to the less economically important feeding on the leaves of the plants, the caterpillars also feed on the flowers and the surface of the fruit, which can make the latter unsuitable for sale.
