The fox bunting ( Passerella iliaca ) is a North American songbird.

features

The 18 cm long foxhammer is a stocky bird. The eastern and northern populations are colored rust-brown on the top and white on the other with rust-brown stripes. In the western population there is a dark brown or gray pattern instead of the rusty brown pattern. The singing of the Fuchsammer is melodic, even in winter it sings from an exposed vantage point.

Occurrence

The foxhammer lives in bushes, thickets and mixed forests in large parts of Canada and the USA. In the cold season the species moves a little further south.

behavior

The foxhammer is mainly on the ground, where it looks for insects, spiders and other invertebrates in the ground or between leaves. Vegetable foods, such as buds, are also part of the diet.

Reproduction

The bowl-shaped nest of twigs and grasses is built on the ground or just above the ground in a bush. The female incubates two to five eggs alone for about two weeks. The male will later help feed the young.
