Fucoidan

Fucoidan is a natural compound found in various types of brown algae (Phaeophyceae) and in some marine animals such as marine snails , sea ​​cucumbers and sea ​​urchins and has attracted attention for its anti-cancer properties. Fucoidan is a sulfated polysaccharide , which contains the sugar fucose . As a mucilage, it is part of the cell wall of algae. Algae are an exceptionally diverse group of organisms. With regard to biomass, brown algae are the dominant organisms in many coastal regions; they have evolved independently and have many new features. Red and green algae , on the other hand, do not contain any fucoidan in their cell walls.

In East Asia, brown algae have been used in local cuisine and as medicine for centuries. Epidemiological studies have reported that the incidence of chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes and cancer is lower in China and Japan than in western countries, possibly due to different living and eating habits. This has led to renewed interest in the properties and ingredients of brown algae. In the past 50 years, more than 3000 ingredients derived from algae have been discovered. Laboratory studies suggest that fucoidan has neuroprotective and immunomodulatory effects. No human studies have been conducted to determine whether the same anti-cancer effects can occur. A human study suggests that fucoidan may help enable longer cycles of chemotherapy. However, more studies are needed to confirm its safety and effectiveness.
