The 1990 air accident at Fernando de Noronha occurred on September 20, 1990. On that day, an Embraer EMB-110P1 Bandeirante of the government of the Brazilian state of Pernambuco crashed into the Atlantic Ocean shortly after taking off from Fernando de Noronha airport . All 12 occupants on board the machine were killed in the accident.
machine
The aircraft concerned was an Embraer EMB-110P1 Bandeirante built in 1981 with the serial number 110368. The aircraft was initially registered with the manufacturer's aircraft registration number PT-SEL before it was handed over to the regional government of Pernambuco in February 1982, where it had its last registration number PT-FAW received. The twin-engined regional aircraft was 2 turboprop engines of the type Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-34 equipped.
Passengers and crew
On board the machine were ten officials from the government of Pernambuco, through which the Fernando de Noronha archipelago is administered. The crew of the machine consisted of a flight captain and a first officer.
the accident
The destination of the government flight was the capital of the state, Recife . Only 30 minutes had passed since the plane landed in Fernando de Noronha when the engines were started for the onward flight. The first officer worked through the checklists alone while the captain ran to the cockpit. The machine was immediately rolled to take off.
The machine took off at 7:40 p.m. local time from runway 12 of Fernando de Noronha Airport. After take-off, the machine rose steeply into the air and leaned to the right. Shortly afterwards, eyewitnesses observed how the machine plunged into the sea.
root cause
During the investigation into the accident it was assumed that the crew had not properly processed the checklists due to the hectic pace before take-off, which caused the aircraft to take off with an incorrect take-off configuration. The investigators also found that both pilots had very little flight experience with the Embraer EMB-110. In addition, they had not sat in a machine of this type for a long time before the accident. The flight captain had last flown an EMB-110 141 days before the accident, the first officer 133 days before the accident.
