Fujita Ryuji

Fujita Ryūji ( Japanese 藤田 隆 治 ; born April 13, 1907 in Hōhoku, Toyoura County ( Yamaguchi Prefecture ); died January 28, 1965 ) was a Japanese painter of the Nihonga direction during the Shōwa period .

life and work

With Yoshioka Kenji and others he founded the artist community "Shin-Nihonga Kenkyūkai" ( 新 日本 画 研究 会 ) in 1934 and the "Shin-Bijutsujin Kyōkai" ( 新 美術 人 協会 ) in 1938 . Fujita Ryūji was fairly unknown in Japan until he was awarded the bronze medal for his painting "Ice Hockey" in the 1936 art competition on the occasion of the Olympic Games in Berlin. When his younger brother died after the Pacific War , he moved to the city of Kitakyushu and worked there. He married at the age of 52, but died six years later.

His student Ryū Seihō ( 笠 青峰 ; * 1937) restored the painting "Ice Hockey" and donated it to the museum in Atlanta for the 100th anniversary of the Olympic Games .
