Zoltán Dani (born July 23, 1956 in Kovin , Federal People's Republic of Yugoslavia ) is a former officer in the armed forces of Serbia and Montenegro .

Career

Born and raised in Kovin, he belongs to the Hungarian minority in Serbia. After finishing school, I first completed an apprenticeship as a baker . Then served from 1978 to 2004 in the Yugoslav People's Army, last in the rank of colonel . During the Kosovo war he commanded the 250th missile artillery battalion .

On March 27, 1999, his unit was operating near the town of Buđanovci in Vojvodina . They were equipped with the Soviet S-125 Neva , a radar-guided anti - aircraft missile system with a two-stage missile, which was commissioned and further developed in 1961 . On that day they managed to shoot down one of the 64 Lockheed F-117 Nighthawk stealth bombers built so far . The pilot of the F-117, Dale Zelko, was able to save himself with the ejector seat and was rescued by a search party the next day. A documentary called The 21st Second was made about the whole story .

Dani and Zelko, whom he shot down, met in 2012 and have been friends ever since. Dani is now back to his civilian job. He is married and has three children.
