Fukushi Katsunari ( Japanese 福士 勝 成 ; * 1917 , Tokyo Prefecture ) is a Japanese doctor, pathologist , non-fiction author and professor emeritus from Nippon Medical University in Tokyo ; like his father Fukushi Masaichi , he is also known in Japan as "Irezumi Hakase" ( 刺青 博士 , roughly: "Dr. Tattoo").

Life

Katsunari Fukushi graduated from Nippon Medical School with a degree in medicine in 1943, received his doctorate there in 1960 and received his habilitation in 1963 . He was chairman of the "Japanese Leprosy Society" ( 日本 癩 学会 , English The Japanese Leprosy Association , today: 日本 ハ ン セ ン 病 学会 ).

The "skin collection"

In the Pathology Department of the University of Tokyo, Fukushi Katsunari maintains a unique collection of tattooed and prepared skin worldwide, which is also referred to as the skin museum in some publications. The inventory includes around 105 tattooed human skins, many of them as so-called "full body suits" . Fukushi Katsunari took over this collection from his father and expanded it to over 100 copies in the following years. In the late 1970s, tattoo artist Manfred Kohrs had a meeting with Fukushi Katsunari. To research the 4th volume of his book series tattoo-time , Ed Hardy visited the skin museum and met Katsunari Fukushi.
