Fuleco

Fuleco is the official mascot of the 2014 World Cup . It depicts a Brazilian three-banded armadillo ( Tolypeutes tricinctus ) with yellow fur and blue carapaces. The species is endemic to Brazil and mainly inhabits the Caatinga region in the northeast of the country. Until the beginning of the 1990s the species was considered extinct, today it is classified as endangered. "Bringing the importance of nature and environmental protection into focus" was described on the homepage specially set up for the mascot as "one of the main concerns of the [...] World Cup [...]". FIFA had a million “Fulecos” fabric made.

The name "Fuleco" is a suitcase word made up of the words futebol ( football ) and ecologia ( ecology ). In an online vote, 1.7 million Brazilians voted for this name, which thus prevailed against the alternative proposals "Amijubi" and "Zuzeco". Numerous media had reported that the term Fuleco in the Portuguese language in Brazil is colloquially coarse for "buttocks". However, it was a false report .

The mascot was first presented on September 16, 2012 on the Brazilian television show Fantástico . The mascot's official song is “Tatu bom de bola” (“Armadillo on the ball”) by Arlindo Cruz.
