The Foundation Fundació Pilar i Joan Miró a Mallorca was founded in 1981 by the Catalan painter Joan Miró and his wife Pilar Juncosa in the Mallorcan capital Palma ( Cala Major ).

history

As Miró had a close relationship with Mallorca throughout his life - his mother and wife were from Mallorca - he finally settled in Mallorca in 1956. After the completion of his Son Abrines house and his Sert workshop, he took up his intensive artistic activity, which included painting, sculpture, ceramics, wall paintings and other techniques and forms.

Miros and his wife wanted to leave the studios to the city of Palma.

"[...] I do not wish that one day any of those terrible skyscrapers will be built here that surround me on all sides [...]. The idea that one day a sledgehammer could tear down the walls of Son Boter and the pictures there could be lost forever haunts me day and night [...] "

In 1992, a museum built by the architect Rafael Moneo was added as the seat of the foundation. The main aim of the foundation is to stimulate new generations of artists and to promote research into Miró's work. A “typical museum format” should be avoided, a dynamic center should be created instead. 2,500 works by Miró and hundreds of objects that the artist collected were added to the inventory. Teaching programs and courses in the field of graphic arts (engraving, lithography, screen printing, photography and new digital techniques) are offered on an ongoing basis.

Studio Sert

The Sert studio was Miró's actual workshop. The architect Josep Lluís Sert designed this building in 1956, which is reminiscent of the style of Le Corbusier from the outside . The interior reflects the artist's style and working method - the simultaneous creation of several works of art.

Son Boter

In 1959, Miró acquired the neighboring Finca Son Boter and incorporated it into his property in order to set up a second studio for painting and sculpture. Here he left numerous graphics on the walls, most of them drafts and detailed drawings for sculptures.
