Find corpse refers to the body of a deceased whose natural death initially went unnoticed and which is only discovered after a long time. Cases of this type usually occur when a person has lived without significant social contacts and there is therefore no one who could notice their disappearance. They mostly occur in larger cities, as the anonymity that is often given there favors such an unnoticed death, while in smaller communities there is more social control that makes a completely withdrawn life difficult or at least leads to the disappearance of a person.

Most of the time, those affected die within their living quarters so that the death itself is not noticed, but accompanying circumstances that are noticeable outside the home, such as the smell of decay or an overcrowded mailbox , often go unnoticed. It is often not possible to determine in retrospect whether, for example, neighbors did not notice these signs in the first place or whether they simply did nothing out of indifference.

A number of business practices that are common today also favor that the death of a person is not noticed by third parties: For example, pensions, rent, energy (electricity / gas) are usually paid cashless, so missing payments do not lead to investigations.

In Japan, the term Kodokushi was coined for unnoticed death .
