The Waldesruh is a former excursion restaurant and rest home in the southern district of Schweinfurt , which is now used as a clinic.

Geographical location

The Waldesruh is located on a hill above the Main Plain in the southern district of Schweinfurt, halfway to the ridge of the northern Steigerwald . It is surrounded by forest on three sides. Below the Waldesruh there are steep slopes that are overgrown with grapevines, fields and fields adjoin. So there is an unobstructed panoramic view of the Main Plain to the front. You can see over countless villages and the Franconian cultural landscape as far as the Rhön . The next villages are at a considerable distance Dingolshausen in the west (below the panoramic view) and Mutzenroth in the south (forest side). The secluded Waldesruh can only be reached by car from the south via Mutzenroth via a single-lane paved path.

The address of the Waldesruh has no street name, but only the location reference "Waldesruh" in 97447 Gerolzhofen, even if it is not in the municipality of Gerolzhofen.

Edification and first successes

In January 1924 the city council of Gerolzhofen granted the architect and hunter Johann Bachmann permission to build a guest house and residential building in the community-free Gerolzhofen / Dingolshausen forest . The house was completed in the spring of 1924 and other buildings followed in the course of the following years. The Waldesruh soon developed into a popular destination for hikes by residents of the surrounding communities. Electricity was only available from 1951 through a generator, and in 1959 the Waldesruh was connected to the power grid. As a result, the region's first electrically operated bowling alley was built there. Until the 1950s, the Waldesruh had no running water, it was brought from the Hubertus spring about 1.5 kilometers away. From 1959 the Kugelfischer plant fire brigade filled tanks on the Waldesruh. The water in the pension rooms was still rationed. In 1964 it was connected to the mains water supply .

1933-1945

During the time of National Socialism , the Waldesruh became a camp of the " voluntary labor service " (FAD). Many day trippers also came to the Hitler memorial that was located there at the time. In 1942, the Waldesruh was sold to the owner of the Schweinfurt-based company FAG Kugelfischer Georg Schäfer .

Time after World War II

After the Second World War , the US Army temporarily used the Waldesruh as an officers' mess in the local American zone of occupation . As early as 1947, the Waldesruh was handed over to a trustee and reopened to the public in 1948.

In 1949, the Waldesruh returned to the ownership of the shepherds and was converted into a company-owned rest home for employees, or used as a business and daily business. From 1951 to 1991 it booked 171,000 overnight stays and more than 15,000 guests. While active employees of the Kugelfischer company were initially sent there to relax, it was until the end of BC. a. the company's own retirees. Internal training courses and conferences of the globally operating group FAG Kugelfischer also took place on the screened area. As a result of a crisis that threatened the existence of FAG Kugelfischer and almost ruined the company, recreational operations were discontinued and the Waldesruh was finally sold.

Clinic at the Steigerwald

In 1994 the Klinik am Steigerwald GmbH & Co. KG acquired the Waldesruh. After conversion and renovation work, the private clinic started operations in 1996. The clinic is an inpatient hospital with 44 beds and mainly treats the chronically ill with the possibilities of Chinese medicine, biological healing methods and a basic medical program. At that time it was the first private hospital for Chinese medicine in Germany. Patients are v. a. People from all over the German-speaking area. The idyllic and quiet location of Waldesruh was once a selection criterion for choosing the location of the TCM clinic according to the management.
