The Funk Island Ecological Reserve is a nature reserve off the island of Newfoundland , which belongs to the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador . The reserve was established in 1964. In 1983 the protected area received its current status.
location
The 5.2 km² large reserve is located east of Fogo Island , 57 km off the northeast coast of Newfoundland. It comprises the approximately 17 hectare Funk Island and the surrounding waters. Funk Island is a flat island made of granite .
fauna
Funk Island is home to the largest guillemot breeding colony in the western North Atlantic during the summer months . It counts more than a million birds. Other seabirds that breed on Funk Island include the northern gannet , northern fulmar , puffin , razorbill , thick-billed muzzle , kittiwake , American herring gull, and black-backed gull .
Up until the end of the 18th century, Funk Island was an important breeding ground for the giant alks . The flightless birds were hunted and their eggs stolen, so that the species eventually died out.
