The Gaelic School Glasgow (Scottish Gaelic: Sgoil Ghàidhlig Ghlaschu ) is a school in Glasgow in which all subjects in the Scottish Gaelic language are co-educational. This type of teaching is called Gaelic medium education .

organization

About 630 children attend school; it is divided into preschool, elementary school and secondary school.

The school has no fixed catchment area, but the student body comes from the greater Glasgow area and from the southwest of Scotland. Many students come from Kilmarnock , East Kilbride , Bishopbriggs , Cumbernauld and Greenock . There are no prerequisites for attending school, neither entrance tests nor a waiting list. There is no form of school selection. Every family wishing to register their child sends a registration to the City of Glasgow (Glasgow City Council). The preschool can be attended from the age of 4, the elementary school from the age of 5.

The secondary school is unique in Scotland as all subjects are taught in Scottish Gaelic. Scottish Gaelic is also the colloquial language throughout the school. Children from the GMU schools (schools with Gaelic medium education units ) in the neighboring regions, especially from East Ayrshire, East Dunbartonshire, Inverclyde, North Lanarkshire and South Lanarkshire, are also accepted.

If the demand increases in the next few years, the school authority in Glasgow plans to expand the school further.

history

The first Gaelic-speaking school opened as a primary school in Glasgow in 1999: Bunsgoil Ghàidhlig Ghlaschu (Gaelic Primary School Glasgow). As more and more parents registered their children for class, the school had to move to a larger area with the help of the authorities. The current building stands on the site of the former Woodside Secondary School and was opened in August 2006 as the Glasgow Gaelic School (Sgoil Ghàidhlig Ghlaschu) and now includes a preschool, elementary school and secondary school.
