Prague Castle Gardens is the name given to a large area next to and below Prague Castle , which consists of several gardens. On the one hand, there is a garden complex that directly adjoins the castle or surrounds it and is located in the district of Hradčany (Hradschin) and partly on the Lesser Town . On the other hand, there are the so-called palace gardens under Prague Castle in the immediate vicinity . Most gardens are interconnected, either by gates or by stairs if they are terraced.

Gardens on Hradcany

There are a total of six gardens in the immediate vicinity of Prague Castle on its northern and southern sides. They form a distinctive green ring around the castle. The Prague Castle administration is responsible for the gardens. They are the following:

  • Hirschgraben (Jelení příkop) is a natural canyon with a total of 8 hectare. Originally used as a defensive wall, large game such as deer were kept here under Rudolf II (hence the name), and they were also hunted.
  • Hartig's Garden (Hartigovská zahrada), a garden created by Isabela Švihovská after 1670 , belongs to the Hartig Palace , which was redesigned in 1720 by Count Ludwig Joseph von Hartig . The garden consists of two small terraces. The garden has a total area of 757 m².
  • Garden on the Schanze (zahrada na Valech) is located on an area of approx. 1.4 hectares between the Paradise Garden in the west and the Black Tower in the east. The first written evidence came as early as 1550 after the garden was built at the behest of the Archduke of Austria, Ferdinand II .
  • The garden on the bastion (zahrada na Baště) is located on the 4th forecourt of the castle and takes up about 80 percent of its area. The name of the garden is reminiscent of the medieval fortification of the castle on its north-western side.
  • The Royal Garden (Královská zahrada), north of the castle, is the largest of the gardens with 3.6 hectares. It was laid out in 1534 in the Renaissance style. On the site there are sights such as Queen Anna's summer palace , the Singing Fountain or the orangery and numerous statues.
  • Paradise Garden (Rajská zahrada), which flows into the garden on the Schanze in the south, was created in the 16th century and was designed by the Archduke of Austria, Ferdinand II , the Emperor Rudolf II. And his brother Matthias .
