Palace Gardens under Prague Castle is the name given to an area below Prague Castle that consists of several gardens. They are located on the southern slope in the Kleinseite district . In addition to these gardens, there are also the Prague Castle Gardens , which are located in the immediate vicinity of the Castle.

Palace gardens

After the defensive function of the southern castle fortifications declined in the 16th century and the wall was torn down, Prague aristocrats acquired the vacated areas and gradually built palaces and gardens, which were intended for recreation. The gardens were first built in the Italian Renaissance style. After their destruction by the Swedes in 1648, they were later rebuilt in the baroque style . Their total area is 7,710 m². The gardens are operated by the Národní památkový ústav (National Monument Institute). The following gardens belong to this complex:

  • Ledebur Garden (Ledeburská zahrada), named after Count Adolf von Ledebur from the Bohemian branch of the family, who bought the earlier-built palace in 1852; the garden was also laid out earlier.
  • Palffy Gardens , consisting of the Great Palffy Garden (Velká Pálffyovská zahrada) and the Small Palffy Garden (Malá Pálffyovská zahrada), named after the Palffy family, who had owned the gardens since 1883; the garden was rebuilt in 1752 and replaced earlier facilities in the same place.
  • Kolowrat Garden (Kolovratská zahrada), with an area of only 700 m², was built in the 13th century on a steep slope between two fortification walls that were built by the Bohemian King Ottokar II. Přemysl . A palace was built here at the end of the 18th century, which later became the property of the Kolowrat family.
  • Small Fürstenberg Garden (Malá Fürstenberská zahrada), named after Prince Karl Egon II zu Fürstenberg , who bought the palace located there in 1822. The terrace-like garden was rebuilt in the Rococo style in 1784–1788 and is home to two orangeries and a loggia with a viewing terrace.
  • Large Fürstenberg Garden , with 1.55 hectares the largest palace garden, extensively reconstructed by 2008. Part of the garden belongs to the Polish embassy and is not accessible.
