Gérard Fromanger (born September 6, 1939 in Jouars-Pontchartrain , Yvelines department , France ) is a French painter and sculptor who lives and works in Paris and Montauto near San Gimignano , Italy .

life and work

His father was a hobby painter and came from an artistically inclined family; So Fromanger painted and drew very early on. He briefly studied art at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière . He also attended evening classes organized by the Paris City Mayor's Office.

Fromanger initially drew and painted figuratively with light and dark contrasts in gray and earth colors. He also dealt with lithography and subsequently preferred contrasting surfaces. As a reaction to American Pop Art , the narrative figuration emerged in France in the 1960s , and he played a decisive role in shaping it.

In May 1968 in Paris, Fromanger co-founded the Art Academy's People's Atelier, which designed and printed thousands of posters. He later made environmentally friendly sculptures and designed costumes and decorations for ballet. Gradually he changed from a socially committed, militant artist to one who takes pleasure in traces, shapes and colors for their own sake. For him, painting is a means of visualizing global change. His pictures are a symphony of overlapping human silhouettes, of lines that seek, network and run - and a symphony of colors, with red dominating.
