Géza Hofi

Géza Hofi (for Hungary just "a Hofi" (the Hofi); born as Géza Hoffmann , * July 2, 1936 in Budapest ; † April 10, 2002 ibid.) Was a Hungarian actor and humorist . He is the most popular Hungarian humorist and parodist of the 20th century and continues to shape Hungarian cabaret today.

Life

Hofi was born as Hoffmann in 1936 in the working-class Kőbánya district of Budapest. He first worked in a porcelain and brick factory. In addition, he began his stage career as an amateur actor. From 1960 he appeared as a professional actor in the Csokonai Theater in Debrecen , after 1963 he worked exclusively as a humorist and parodist. With an appearance on a New Year's Eve program by Magyar Rádió in 1968, he gained a lot of attention, and so his popularity increased enormously. From 1969 he performed for many years in the small theater " Mikroszkóp Színpad " in Budapest. He also gave his own self-staged performances in the Budapest Madách Theater . Hofi, who occasionally caused a sensation for many parodic appearances in the country with his extraordinary talent as an entertainer, remained contractually loyal to the "Mikroszkóp Színpad" theater until 1982.

He was known for being able to establish good contact with the audience and for being able to “enchant” the audience. He had very good musical skills and was quick to react and improvise. He was one of the few artists allowed to criticize the political system of János Kádár . His annual New Year's Eve show became an integral part of the New Year's Eve cabaret program on Hungarian television and radio, and it was the number one talking point in Hungary for weeks.

Hofi had to undergo several eye surgeries and also suffered a heart attack . After another heart attack, he died in 2002 at the age of 65.
