topography

The Göpelkuppe is a north-west-south-east oriented mountain ( 350.9  m above sea level ) consisting of shell limestone and Zechstein , it borders the Eisenach basin to the east. Its eastern foothills are the Reihersberge and the Arnsberg. The Pflugensberg is in front of it in the northwest and the Sophienhöhe to the southwest. The Eisenacher small settlement Gefilde is located on the northeast slope.

history

The Göpelskuppe got its name in the 19th century after the landowner at the time. The area close to the city, which had been deforested since the Middle Ages, was used for agriculture, the rights of use as a sheep pasture were claimed by the Eisenach shepherds and shepherds sitting in front of the Nikolaitor. In the late 19th century, the family of the Eisenach brick factory owner and geologist Johann Georg Bornemann acquired the area. The steep terrain to the Johannistal was upgraded to woody trees by planting trees. The so-called “Bornemann Bank” with a view of the Wartburg has been located on a visual aisle for over 100 years.

In September 1757, during the Seven Years' War, a large unit of the Imperial Army camped on the strategically important hill under the orders of the Prince of Saxony-Hildburghausen. In the strip of wood on the ridge of the Göpelskuppe one can still see the remains of an artillery position secured with trenches. The site is a ground monument .

The Göpelskuppe is also the location of the fraternity monument. The construction took place through a generous transfer of the building site by the Bornemann family. The associated hotel and club house of the German fraternities was built on the south side of the Göpelskuppe.
