Günter Ziegler (born January 21, 1938 in Schweinfurt ) is a German materials researcher who has mainly dealt with high-performance ceramics and biomaterials.

Life

After graduating from high school, he studied physics at the Technical University of Munich with an additional focus on engineering and received his doctorate from the RWTH Aachen University in the Faculty of Engineering. Ing. He then worked for several years in the metalworking and high-performance ceramics industry.

From 1969 to 1989 he worked as a department head at the Institute for Materials Research at the German Aerospace Research Center in Cologne-Porz , focusing on the microstructure and structure-property correlation of inorganic materials and the development of high-performance ceramics. During this time he had lectureships at the University of Cologne and received a professorship at the Technical University of Eindhoven .

In 1989 Ziegler was offered a professorship at the University of Bayreuth and was one of the key players in the development of the Faculty of Applied Sciences and the focus on materials science. He built up the chair for ceramics and composite materials and headed it until 2003. From the chair, he founded the Friedrich Baur Research Institute for Biomaterials (FBI) and the company BioCer Entwicklungs-GmbH, whose aim was to research biomaterials for various medical purposes Applications, on the other hand their implementation in medical devices. Here he initiated many national and international collaborations with research institutions, clinics and companies. The consequences were leading positions in specialist organizations and research associations. Examples are: Member (and in some cases chairman) in numerous national and international committees, etc. a. in boards, executive committees, advisory boards, program commissions, editorial boards, specialist committees and working groups of specialist societies. Frequent expert and review activities for various national and international funding institutions and specialist journals as well as the organization of national and international conferences.
